Creative excellence awaits around every corner
Many things contribute to Stauntons on the Green’s unique character; but one of the most important is our fascinating and eclectic art collection. Throughout the building, rooms and garden, gems of Irish and international art adorn the walls and public spaces. Most are by lesser known – but still notable – nineteenth and twentieth century artists, and were personally selected by the hotel’s late owner, Richard H Driehaus (1942-2021).
Among these are striking lithograph posters by David Lance Goines (b. 1945), an American artist, typographer and author. Also noteworthy are watercolours by Marc Velten (1924-2018), oil paintings by Louise Abbéma (1853-1927), James Bolivar Manson (1879-1945) and Irish painter William Crampton Gore (1871-1946) amongst others. Mr Driehaus was also responsible for acquiring one of the hotel’s most cherished artefacts: ‘The Blessed Julie and Two Children’. This remarkable stained glass was created by acclaimed Irish artist Harry Clarke in the mid-1920s. Other striking examples of Clarke’s work can be seen in the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square and the National Gallery.
Nameplates and signage throughout are bespoke original Belleek, a famous Irishcraft pottery since 1857.
The garden provides a beautifully serene setting for other items from the collection. Among these are sculptures of “Eiar, the Goddess of Springtime” and the Baroque-style fountain. Both echo the works that grace Iveagh Gardens, just over the wall.
In addition to the many original paintings, drawings and lithographs, the townhouse also showcases numerous striking photographs of Dublin that will whet your appetite to experience more of the city.
